UK Police Arrest Two Teenagers Suspected of Nursery Hack and Ransom

Two 17-year-old boys have been arrested in Hertfordshire by police investigating a cyberattack on a UK-based nursery chain, Kido. The hackers, who called themselves Radiant, had accessed data from a software provider called Famly and used it to post images and personal information of 20 toddlers on a dark web site.

The Hack

The group had demanded a ransom of £600,000 in Bitcoin in exchange for not posting more information and pictures of the children. They first began contacting media in late September and posted the images and personal information on a darknet site on September 25.

Public Outcry and Backlash

The hack attracted widespread public attention, with many condemning the actions as "a truly barbaric new low". The hackers were taken aback by the reaction and responded by blurring the images they had posted, before eventually removing all the data from their darknet site and claiming to have deleted all 8,000 children's files.

Arrests and Investigation

The two teenagers were arrested at their homes on suspicion of computer misuse and blackmail. The police say that both suspects are being held for questioning and have yet to be charged.

"We understand reports of this nature can cause considerable concern, especially to those parents and carers who may be worried about the impact of such an incident on them and their families," said Will Lyne, the Metropolitan Police's Head of Economic and Cybercrime.

"These arrests are a significant step forward in our investigation, but our work continues, alongside our partners, to ensure those responsible are brought to justice."

Statement from Kido

A spokesperson for Kido welcomed the arrests, saying: "We welcome this swift action from the Met Police and recognise this is an important milestone in the process of bringing those responsible to justice. We have cooperated throughout this process with law enforcement and the relevant authorities. We remain committed to supporting police and, importantly, families, colleagues, and the wider Kido community."

Expert Analysis

Cybersecurity expert Jen Ellis said that the hackers' actions were likely motivated by pragmatism rather than morality. "This is more about pragmatism than morality," she said. "These criminals are clearly shocked and worried by the attention their hack has caused and they are trying to protect themselves or their brand."
