German Authorities Crack Down on Darkweb Fake ID Ring
The Case
A 36-year-old man from the Jerichower Land region has been arrested and is being held in investigative custody for allegedly selling fake identification documents with freely selectable personal details on the darknet.
The Operation
The suspect is accused of at least 50 cases of document forgery over several years. He is believed to have used the darknet to find customers, with some of them being identified through a now-defunct trading platform called crimemarket.is, which was accessible via both the darknet and the internet.
The Charges
The suspect is accused of commercial forgery of documents. Nine alleged customers were searched in seven federal states: Bavaria, Berlin, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony-Anhalt, and Schleswig-Holstein, with around 300 federal police officers involved in the operation.
The Fake IDs
The fake IDs sold for up to €550, with payments made in cryptocurrency. The personal details and photos on the documents were freely selectable. The forged documents were allegedly used for crimes such as fraud and money laundering.

The Investigation
During the searches, police found blank ID cards, engraving machines, stamps, and fake foil elements. A motorcycle was also seized. The authorities also secured "extensive user data", which is expected to provide valuable leads for identifying the suspect's customers.
